Brielle twisted her face upward and met Bradford’s gaze. Her hair, loosened from her bath, spread across his shoulder and over his arm. He swallowed the lump grown in his throat and tried to black out the image of her standing, unclothed, in the bathroom doorway. Whatever she’d thought her flaws were, he’d not seen them. She was incredibly beautiful.

“Bradford? Let’s order in.”

He smiled. “If you’d like. I need to call Mother afterward. I am a little worried I haven’t heard from her already, but maybe Walton hasn’t shown his face yet.” Which meant she didn’t realize he’d left town. She would definitely have called if she had.

“She’s staying with Jarek?” Brielle asked.

He nodded best he could while lying down. “She’s moved herself in, in fact. He’s the jock amongst us. He played baseball, soccer, and a dozen other sports growing up. But actually, he’s also the most like her and a definite ‘mama’s boy’. They fit together.”

Brielle’s lips curved. “And Packard? He strikes me as very decisive.”

“He’s strong-minded, for sure.”

Brielle looked away, and he moved his gaze to a point on the ceiling. “I am the most composed. If you need someone to stare into the eye of the storm, that’s me.”

“I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” Brielle replied. “Walton sees the storm and starts dancing a jig.”

Bradford couldn’t hold in his laughter, and soon, she’d joined in. It felt good to laugh, even better to hear her do so. That it was over Walton was a positive sign. When he’d suggested she take the honeymoon, he’d not thought about how she’d struggle ... or how hard it would be if she came alone.

God forbid she’d have run into Walton by herself. That thought sobered him quickly. Whatever he’d endure, he was glad he’d come, for that reason alone.

She exhaled, and gradually, her breaths slowed. He listened to her sleep, the pulse of it, dragging his own eyes shut. He awoke facing her, a cell phone ringing. Brielle’s eyes popped open.

“Is that yours or mine?” she asked. “We have the same ringtone.”

He chuckled. Yet another thing they had in common. The number of similarities was growing with every passing minute.

“I think it’s mine.” She rolled over and stood up, searching amongst her things. She produced the device, waving it before checking the caller. “It’s Dana,” she said.

Tapping the screen with her thumb, she brought it to her ear. “Hello? Hey ... Where am I? Actually, I went on my honeymoon.” She laughed, the sound jittery. “My honeymoon, that is what I said. Someone suggested I go anyway and enjoy myself ...”

Her head turned, Brielle met his gaze. “Would you believe that bastard was here?”

A squeal erupted from the caller.

“I know, right? Well, we threw him out. We ... No, I’m not alone I ... I think this is the best thing Walton could have done for me.”

Bradford’s throat tightened.

“He introduced me to the most wonderful man ...”

She disconnected, seconds later, after a fond goodbye and laid her phone on the bedside table.
